1.
There’s just one way round In this crazy dream Through the highs and lows And every inbetween But there’s a Storyline Runnin through my heart And if I hold back It’s gonna tear me apart Cos it’s a warning sign And it’s the friend I need And it’s the only place My hungry heart can feed And it’s the edge of time And it’s the way back home Where I can rest a while Before it calls me on And it won’t let me go Til I take that chance Test the water Feel the heat of the dance No it won’t let me go Til the dice has been cast Cos the Storyline turns Where the question is asked There’s a lightnin’ flash Out on the road somewhere When I’ve stayed too long You know it finds me there And I don’t know where It’s gonna lead me to But if I’m walkin’ now The Storyline is comin’ through
2.
It’s 3 o’clock in the morning They’re bangin’ on the door I know their names And I know their faces And I know just what they’ve come here for There’s a chill wind blowin’ across the valley And the door flies open wide 3 minutes to take all that you can carry And after that There’ll be no place for you to hide But a short time ago You drank our whiskey We ate at your tables We danced ‘til the dawn The living was good And the harvest was plenty Now the bloodlines are runnin’ Across this valley of stone My grandfather sits in the corner And he looks so frail and old But he built this house With his own two hands In the burning sun and the bitter cold And his eyes say he’s going nowhere The choice was made long ago He’s laid a wife and two sons In this ancient ground Down by the river Where the tall trees grow I lift my eyes to the mountains And the snow filled pass that I’ll take I kiss the eyes and the face Of the man I love Then turn around and slowly walk away

Freedom Song 06:40
It’s six long hours til the day breaks I wake you now it’s time for us to leave The children in our arms May God keep us safe from harm We take the road that leads us to the sea Two hundred souls standing by the water We climb aboard in silence take a place Families tied and torn As the land where we were born Fades and disappears without a trace Freedom Song Freedom Song Freedom Song Freedom Song For twenty years i've laboured in this prison ‘Cos I broke the rules and spoke my mind out loud A country ruled by fear Where thousands disappear And I’m just another voice lost from the crowd ‘Til the day when all of this is over And I walk away or die here in the dirt My heart is just as clear And it’s stronger than the fear And I’ve come to understand what this is worth Freedom Song Moonlight dancing on the water The coast of Europe coming into sight We drift in on the tide Hand in hand and side by side Step ashore and disappear into the night Freedom Song
4.
In the mystery That surrounds all our knowing Where the singer meets the song Disappearin’, Die into the candle’s glowin’ Where you are always new No cloud of emotion to spoil the view No time in here No veil of fear Nothing you can do And nothin’ to hold on to Oh no, no, no Nothin’ to hold on to Oh no, no, no Nothin’ to hold on to In that broken dream That keeps you up there On that movie screen You’re just another shadow cryin’ Dressed to kill Where reality Wears the painted mask of fantasy Spillin’ chaos from your lips A reasoned point of view But eyes that hold the pain of bitter tears Could never see what’s true From the open ground That keeps this old world Spinnin’ round A silent voice just keeps on callin’ You can’t make it on your own Where ideas that rise Whisper stories about the life inside Ah but self is one within Compassion born anew And holdin’ on, and holdin’ on And holdin’ on It aint gonna get you through

They stand 3 blocks apart Starin’ out to the road But they lean on each other Call it sharin’ the load And she aint no angel Fallen down from the sky And God knows he’s no hero They’re just tryin to get by In their life and times In their life and times They stamp their feet in the cold At the start of the day Hours waiting on strangers And so many just turn away But there’s a Big Issue burning’ In a heart that won’t lie Between store window comforts And a yearning inside In their life and times In their life and times It’s comin’ in from everywhere Through the dark hours And the deep despair Through the shadows in their eyes Through the ones they don’t recognise In their life and times In their life and times Sometimes a line you can draw Or a path you can trace And sometimes things just happen And it’s right there in your face Cos’ worlds fall apart For no reason or rhyme Leave you no place to run And a mountain to climb In your life and times In your life and times It’s comin’ in from everywhere Through the dark hours And the deep despair Through the shadows in your eyes Through the ones you don’t recognise In your life and times In your life and times

Old devil moons out tonight Everything’s gonna be alright Cos baby he’s got plans For you and me And way before that mornin’ sun Has old night time on the run You’re gonna be lyin’ in my arms Just you wait ’n’ see We’ll go riding in my car But we ain’t gonna ride too far Just to someplace Where the wind and the water’s free And if you look up in the sky Right into those ancient eyes You’re gonna find that old man smilin’ Just you wait ‘n’ see Cos he knows what goes inside your head And he hears what you can’t say And he knows just what your mamma said About throwin’ your heart away He sees the world the way it is And how it’s really meant to be And tonight he’s gonna make it all work out right Just you wait ’n’ see All those hours of love we’ll share Moonlight magic in the air I’m knockin’ at that door And he holds the key And it’s a promise that come what may Tonight before he slips away You’re gonna be lyin’ in my arms Just you wait ’n’ see

And she said: Come sit down beside me And tell me what you see All the things you’re runnin’ from And all you’d like to be Cos somewhere there’s a rainbow hangin’ Arc’d against your sky To lead you through the mysteries That will greet you by and by And he said: What makes the wind blow? What makes the river flow? What makes a flower grow? And why? And she said: So many things will find you You will not understand They’re the clouds that hold the secrets That will slip right through your hands But sometimes there’s a moment When it’s all so clear to see And it’s waiting like an open door That’s there to set you free And he said: What makes the birds sing? What makes the church bell ring? What makes winter turn to spring? And why? And in between the laughter And the tears that have to fall The river flows forever on Runnin’ deep inside us all And she said: Sometime’s there’s no reason Or not one you can see It’s like it’s just the way the world is made And how it’s meant to be But for every question answered There’s a million more that seem To fade into the stillness Of a half forgotten dream And she said: To feel the free wind blowin’ To be the river flowin’ To watch a flower growin’ There’s no why There’s no why

We started together We were two of a kind But you were the dreamer With stars in your eyes And they took you away Across the ocean so blue Chasin’ your dreams Tryin’ to make them come true And I stayed in the old town Where I work in the store Just like my daddy And his daddy before And the letters that come From those far away shores Can’t tempt me to stray From the old town’s front door But we’re two of a kind Tho’ we’re so far apart It’s the same road we’re travellin’ Comin’ straight from the heart So my journey’s yours And your journey’s mine We’re travellin’ companions And we’re two of a kind And each time we meet now It takes a short while To work through the changes And grind down the miles So we talk through the night ‘Til the morning sun shines And the cards on the table Show we’re two of a kind

about

I was 65 last year and felt the time was right to try to get these songs ‘out’ in the way that I hear them: no frills, just the ‘live’ sound of guitar, harmonica and voice.

Songs about freedom, war, homelessness, love, friendship and our spiritual inner core.

So, these are some of the stories, songs and tunes of my life and times. See how they feel!
